Wet or discolored insulation, insulation with visible mold, or material that’s been disturbed by pests are also clear indicators. Less obvious signs show up in your living space: floors that feel cold in winter, rooms above the crawl space that are harder to keep comfortable, or heating and cooling bills that seem higher than they should be. If your insulation is original to an older home and hasn’t been inspected in years, it’s worth taking a look.

This is a question that trips up a lot of homeowners and even some contractors. The traditional approach was to install insulation between the floor joists, up against the subfloor. In an encapsulated or sealed crawl space, the more effective approach is to insulate along the foundation walls and rim joist instead, treating the crawl space as part of the conditioned envelope of the home. A fully encapsulated crawl space often includes insulation along the walls, but insulation alone doesn’t seal the space from moisture or outside air. In most cases, yes. We remove the old material, assess the condition of the surfaces underneath, address any moisture or mold issues if present, and install new insulation. The old insulation is hauled away as part of the job. If significant mold or structural damage is found during removal, that may need to be addressed before insulation proceeds, which we’d discuss with you before continuing.
